We had a praying mantis stop by the backyard yesterday. It was walking across the trash bin (the one that I wanted to use) so I scooped it up and placed it on the peas…then ran in to get the camera…

…is a green pepper! This little guy will be plucked this week and will probably end up on the dinner table at some point. Nothing else is really ready at the moment, however but things are looking good. The squash and tomato plants have flowers, the peas are starting to climb and our beans have grown rapidly with onset of the warmer weather…we’ll be looking good in about another month.

…I understand “Purple” is a little bit ambiguous, but here is the key to the basil quiz…we have all five of these growing outside our house and they recently have found their way into an experimental ice cream that we are trying right now…stay tuned for the results…

…we’re starting to get into the groove of incorporating local ingredients into our meals. The markets have had more offerings and we’ve been home the last week or so to actually think about what we’re going to make for each meal. Today we started our day with omelets filled with local squash blossoms and swiss chard…

…it’s starting to be that time of year where there is almost enough local foods available to fill our plates! Last night we had some lamb ribs from Watson Farm, greens from Ledge Ends Farm and asparagus from the Goddard Park Farmer’s Market…not to mention that tonight I grabbed some basil from our side yard to accompany our pasta…exciting times, indeed!

Our favorite ice cream hands down is from the Ice House in Rye, NH. Since we’ve moved to Rhode Island, we’ve been trying to find a facsimile, but to no avail. We recently tried Gray’s ice cream over in Bristol…the verdict? Our second favorite ice cream…the flavors were very rich and varied, but it still lacked the consistency of our favored Ice House…but second place isn’t too bad and we’ll definitely have to go back to see if they can inch their way into first!

Strawberry picking season opened at Schartner Farms here in Rhode Island and Ingrid headed out early on Friday AM to load up on the red berries. She managed to pick 8 pounds in a relatively short period of time…our empty containers are ready to be filled for freezing…and there is a bowl on the counter filled with berries for random snacking…
