…I scored these succulent beef shanks from Pat’s Pastured at the East Greenwich Farmer’s Market on Monday. Seeing that the weather has cooled off and the kitchen is more tolerable, I decided that this Sunday would be the best time to fire up the oven and cook these guys up. I started around 2:30 and by halftime, these were ready to go…we had them with a bed of sauteed baby spinach…quite the comfort meal on the last weekend of true summer!

Sadly, this is probably the last of our backyard tomatoes…we survived the blight and managed to have a decent year overall…

…it seems as though we’re in the in-between time between summer and fall. The markets are now full of squashes, apples and heartier vegetables due to the accelerated growing season and the cooler temperatures. I was thrown off a little today while shopping- do I start getting apples? It seems too early for squash. The tomatoes still look good…and there is always corn. Obviously, this in-between season inevitably increases our selections and I’ll just have to adapt to the offerings that our farmers have to offer.

With this year’s growing season starting so early and seemingly continuing on, we decided to give growing peas a second shot. Our first go-round didn’t work out so well- we turned a tomato cage upside down to use as a trellis and the peas never really grew on it like I expected. Due to the demise of our zucchini, a spot opened up in one of our boxes. I grabbed some downed branches from the wooded area down the street and built a support to hang some twine that the peas can grow up…they just broke ground last week and will be reaching the twine any day now…hopefully we’ll have better results!
