…it seems as though we’ve shaken that late spring/early summer weather pattern which brought us grey skies and lots of rain. In response to the recent hot and dry weather, our plants have started producing! We were able to collect enough peas and beans to compliment our last two dinners and our tomatoes are starting to blossom, the eggplant has doubled in size and our second planting of radishes has already sprouted. Now, if we keep up with the watering we should have a couple of choices in regards to our dinner plans- all right from our backyard!

Some of our more prolific producers this year have been our bush string beans. We planted three each of  “Provider Snap Bush” and “Royal Burgundy Bush” beans and we have had about three harvests since they have matured, which was a surprise because I thought we would get one round of beans and that would be it. The plants lie pretty low, so they get knocked over in the rain, but that doesn’t seem to bother them…the funny thing is that when the purple beans are cooked, they turn green!

I was very surprised at the Goddard Park market this morning- one vendor had corn already! I picked up a dozen ears which will be shucked and cooked this evening…some of which will be frozen for the winter. Some nice green and yellow beans and pattypan squash ended up in my bag as well…
