…signs of life are starting to peek through in corners of our yard…the tulips have broken ground, the forsythia are starting to bud and the hostas are poking through. In response to these signals, I built a pea trellis in one of our raised beds to see if we can get some early season peas…along with some radishes. Of course, as soon as I put the seeds in the ground the temperatures cooled off a bit and the nighttime air has been below freezing. With the strong sun, however we’re hoping that the seeds will germinate and before long we’ll be eating our first vegetables of the season…but in the time being, we’ll have to settle for what’s available at the local markets (who do much better with greenhouses!).

After last week’s historic rains here in Rhode Island stopped and the flood waters started to recede (we were lucky- no damage here) the sun finally came out and things started to get back to “normal”. With just a couple days of sun, things started happening around our yard…the radishes we put in a couple of weeks ago broke ground, the hops started to climb and the forsythia has burst into an explosion of yellow…and for those of you awaiting the Easter Bunny, we hope he delivers and that everyone gets to enjoy their day!

After last week’s four day deluge, the sun came out and things started to happen. Our chives started to sprout, the lilies and jonquils both broke ground and the forsythia buds started popping. We took advantage of the good weather this weekend to rake the yard and plant some early vegetables- we put in seeds for radishes, beets and lettuce; only time will tell if we get any results, but is was great to get out and enjoy the outdoors!
